Purpose: to reveal the essence of the concept of «sustainable development of the wine industry», «Global Wine Producers Environmental Sustainability Principles» (GWPESP) and the mechanism for introducing sustainability into the viticulture and wine industry.

Methods and results. Using general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, we studied activities/experience of international profile organizations in the field of unification of approaches and criteria for assessing the degree of sustainability and, as a result, the creation of a single international system of indicators of sustainable development in the viticulture and wine industry, with a focus on the sustainability of the vinegrowing and winemaking landscape on the global, regional, national, local levels. Using the method of comparative analysis we analized the strategic programs of sustainable development of the viticulture and wine industry in the USA (California), New Zealand, South Africa, Chile and Australia. Developed recommendations on the integration of the principles of sustainable development of the viticulture and wine industry, taking into account the main agents of influence and instruments.
