INTERNATIONAL TOURIST FLOWS AND OUTBOUND TOURISM ACTIVITY

The aim is to investigate outbound tourist flows, in particular, to find out whether they depend on the population of a particular country, and also to assess the measure of involving the country's population and their consumer expenditures in international tourism.

The methodology of the study is based on the use of the statistical base and methodology of the World Bank and the World Tourism Organization, methods of mathematical statistics were used also, incl. Correlation analysis.

The results of the study did not reveal the dependence of the volumes of outbound tourism on the number of a particular country's population. Therefore, the index of outbound tourist activity (OTA) was proposed as a measure of involvement the population of the country and their consumer expenditures to international tourism, because people's propensity to travel abroad can significantly affect the number of departures. As a result of the ranking of 80 countries in the world by the OTA index, factors, which determine the outbound tourist activity of the population of a country, were identified. In particular, it was found that the outbound tourist activity of the population is determined, first of all, by the economic factor as value of household consumption expenditures (per capita). In addition, there is a noticeable effect of geographical factors. Thus, the highest OTA indices were in dwarf countries, where the usual environment of residents covered their territory entirely. The climate influences the outbound tourist activity also, because it is the main condition for the most popular recreation – swimming and beach. In particular, in countries where there is a small amount of solar radiation and the marine waters do not warm up to comfortable temperatures, there is an increased outbound tourist activity.

Scientific novelty consists in the introduction of the index of outbound tourist activity (OTA), as a measure of involving the country's population and their consumer expenditures in outbound tourism.

The practical significance of the investigation's results is the possibility of comparing outbound tourism of different countries to study the factors of formation of outbound tourist flows.

Key words: international tourism; outbound tourist flows, tourist departures, expenditure on outbound tourism, outbound tourist activity.
